Edward Norton Clip 1

"The idea of fight club, I think, it's not fighting against other people, it's about fighting to free yourself from the idea of received values, values to other people and maybe that even just advertising culture has suggested are the things that ought to be, you ought to be measuring your life by, and the fight club is really resistance to the notion of being enslaved by a material value system and because the fighting is really not about, it's not a suggestion in any way that aggression taken outward at other people is a solution to problems. It's not the spirit at all in this film. It's about one character suggesting to another 'I don't want to die without having had my own experiences without having ... I don't want to insulate myself from pain anymore'."

Edward Norton Clip 2

"The whole idea of Fight Club is a very metaphoric surreal idea. It's not based in anything real at all. I think the whole film is kind of a metaphoric dream in the way it comes out literally of a person's brain in the beginning and it's like this dream of a person trying to escape his own life by recreating himself and you know it's intentionally surreal and almost dream-like. I think that the fight club itself is not about brutality in the sense that it's not about...the fight club is not an attempt to vent your frustrations by taking it out on other people aggressively. It's an an aggression directed inwardly. Fight club is about fighting yourself and the idea of getting cocooned in the value system and in the idea of material possessions defining you and the fight is to strip yourself of those conventions and stop escaping pain, so that it's almost like a self help group. The guys get up at the end and hug each other and thank each other for the cathartic experience of feeling something."
