UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The shadowy, nightmare world of murder, mayhem and Dr. Hannibal Lecter comes into the home on April 1, 2003 when the hit thriller 'Red Dragon' debuts on DVD and video from Universal Studios Home Video. The DVD is priced at $19.95 M.A.P. ($26.98 S.R.P.) and pre-order close is February 25. A two-disc Director's Edition will also be offered and priced at $27.95 MAP ($34.98 S.R.P.). The order close date for the rental VHS is March 11.

Spine-Tingling Study of Hannibal Lecter Among DVD Bonus Features

'Red Dragon' is the first terrifying chapter in the Hannibal Lecter trilogy, and introduces the chilling character prior to the events depicted in 'The Silence of the Lambs.' For the first time ever, the 'Red Dragon' DVD explores the life and criminal mind of serial killer Hannibal Lecter. The DVD features an FBI file based on his case history and an interview with famed FBI profiler John Douglas, who founded the profiling system that has become the standard for crime-solving investigations. Douglas has also interviewed such real life serial killer as Charles Manson, Richard Speck and Ted Bundy, among others.

Other highlights include: The Making of 'Red Dragon,' a behind-the-scenes look with director Brett Ratner throughout the production of the film that contains interviews with producer Dino De Laurentiis and actors Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes and Emily Watson among others; Feature Commentary with Brett Ratner; a segment on Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, and deleted scenes and alternate versions.

A Return to the Chills of 'The Silence of the Lambs'

Hailed by critics as a masterful return to the psychological thrills of 'The Silence of the Lambs,' 'Red Dragon' stars Edward Norton as detective Will Graham, whose retirement from the police force comes to an abrupt end when he is pulled into the hunt for a serial killer who seems destined to strike again. In his quest for answers that may help uncover the killer's identity, Graham reluctantly turns to the cannibalistic Dr. Lecter, played to chilling perfection by Hopkins -- whose first portrayal of Lecter in 'The Silence of the Lambs' earned him an Academy AwardŽ for Best Actor in 1991. While the two men work together on the case, the shy and awkward Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself drawn to his blind co-worker Reba (Emily Watson) -- who has no idea of Dolarhyde's inner demons or his dark intentions.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Thomas Harris, 'Red Dragon' moves inexorably to a stunning conclusion that makes its "prequel" relationship to 1991's Best Picture Oscar winner, 'The Silence of the Lambs,' vividly clear.

With a stellar cast that also includes Harvey Keitel, Mary-Louise Parker and Philip Seymour Hoffman, 'Red Dragon' "returns the series to 'The Silence of the Lambs form,'" says Jack Mathews of the New York Daily News. Says CNN Radio's Paul Clinton: "'Red Dragon' has you spellbound ... the ultimate in psychological thrillers."
