Be very careful that you know what you're getting when you order the Red Dragon DVD online. There are several different versions and the packaging is nearly identical. There is the Director's Edition (a 2 disc DVD set), a Collector's Edition Widescreen (1 disc DVD) and just the Collector's Edition (1 disc DVD which I guess is a fullscreen format, but it is not specified).

9/23/02 The first RD interview by EN has been posted by today's Dark Horizons- EN interview and they've also gotten one with Anthony Hopkins as well. Friday's Dark Horizons had a tiny tidbit about Ralph Fiennes (well maybe not tiny).

Every now and then there's an English tabloid story that's so funny you've got to laugh, today one such one emerged. The Mirror reports that star Ralph Fiennes had no problem going nude for a scene in the Hannibal Lecter prequel, in fact according to Director Brett Ratner "We had to digitally remove part of his willy because it was so long, in the end we had to remove three or four inches". Fiennes says "It's ridiculous when men get out of bed wearing underwear or pants after sleeping with a girl - it's just not realistic. Nudity's no big deal to me". In any case the make-up artists caught an eyeful, the full length back tattoo that Fiennes' sports in the film took an astonishing eight hours to apply. Thanks to The Z Review

Mutual Admiration Society

Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton
EN is a great admirer of Anthony Hopkins' work. He presented Hopkins with the Modern Master award at the 2000 Santa Barbara Film Festival. When Hopkins accepted the award he said, "It's an honor, and I'm glad Edward has volunteered to give me the award -- and that's not Hollywood babble, because he's a great actor and I'm very honored about that."

They are featured together in a March 2000 GQ article The Conversations where EN opens by reading a quote from his journal, "After seeing Shadowlands in 1993, I wrote, 'Anthony Hopkins is a marvel. I feel like I need to thank him personally for the performances he gives. I could watch him endlessly. And if I could stop being totally entranced and pull back for a second. I could learn all I need to know from watching him.'"

EN has this to say about Lecter and Graham: "It's a relationship that contains both mutual loathing and mutual admiration."

8/1/02 Last night's Entertainment Tonight segment seemed to be a more detailed trailer then the teaser currently in theaters. It built on the the aspects of the current one but added details including a glimpse of Graham's (EN) family, a flashback of the violent confrontation between Lecter and Graham, as well as more on Dollarhyde (Fiennes), the Dragon and Lounds (Hoffman), Reba (Watson)... O.K. well just more on everything. Also, AICN posted details from a Red Dragon test screening.

7/31/02 PM LAST MINUTE VCR ALERT!- TONIGHT's (Wednesday's) Entertainment Tonight will feature a segment on Red Dragon.

7/31/02 Red Dragon will not be shown at the Venice Film Festival since it is still in postproduction and will not be completed in time (Hollywood Reporter).

6/19/02 1 AM RED DRAGON OFFICIAL WEBSITE is now online!! The Red Dragon trailer is now available on the MSN Entertainment Page and the Apple Quicktime Trailers site. Added A Man of Many Faces box.

6/18/02: Access Hollywood TONIGHT will feature Red Dragon scenes, probably from the trailer. Dark Horizons mentions that the Red Dragon trailer will debut on the web at MSN and Apple tomorrow and will be attached to Minority Report, which opens Friday.

6/16/02: Access Hollywood on both Monday and Tuesday will show scenes from Red Dragon. [Thanks to Joanne for the info!]. This week's Entertainment Weekly features the first pictures from the film: First Look: Red Dragon [Thanks to Joanne and Neta for the info!]. A report from Aint it Cool News (6/9/02) mentions that Ratner is currently editing the film and "is very happy with it." Comingsoon.net posted that on a recent appearance on "The View" Hopkins answered yes to a question as to whether this will be his last film as Lecter. I've added a Red Dragon image gallery and a new box for this page: My Enemy, My Friend
Philip Seymour Hoffman,
Harvey Keitel, and Edward Norton

My Enemy, My Friend, My Father?

Tabloid reporter Freddy Lounds' (Philip Seymour Hoffman) intrusive reporting enrages Will Graham (Norton) in Red Dragon. But in The 25th Hour (which was shot right after RD), Norton and Hoffman play best friends (along with Barry Pepper) out on the last night before Norton is sent to prison.

Weirder still, Brian Cox, who originated the role of Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter plays Norton's father in The 25th Hour

More trivia: Hoffman was originally interested in the role of serial killer Francis Dolarhyde (the Dragon) played by Ralph Fiennes

5/22/02: Coming Attractions has the first look at the teaser poster for Red Dragon. See pic above.

5/3/02: Is EN still filming RED DRAGON? The Hollywood Reporter mentions today that The 25th Hour is currently shooting in New York. Yesterday, Variety.com reported that director Ratner is "preparing to wrap" Red Dragon . So is EN currently on the set of Red Dragon or The 25th Hour or are one or both of them shooting scenes without his character?

5/2/02: Filming is ending soon. Variety.com announced an upcoming project for director Ratner today and mentioned that he is "preparing to wrap" Red Dragon.

4/30/02: From one Lecter to another: Variety reports that Brian Cox has been cast as EN's father in The 25th Hour, the movie EN will start right after completing Red Dragon. Strangley enough, Cox originated the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter in "Manhunter" the first adaptation of Thomas Harris's Red Dragon. Before anyone sends me this scoop, let me mention it: the two new photos from Red Dragon that AICN posted are not really new (and only one is from the film). The first is the Baltimore Sun flaming photo that I posted here on 4/7/02 with the article Baltimore is stunt double for Chicago in new movie. The second is a younger looking Lecter which looks like it could come from the film, but it really does not. The eagle-eyed crew at Hannibal's Palace recognized as a unused theme developed for the Hannibal DVD and that was shown in a DVDfile article with Charles de Lauzirika

4/29/02 Dark Horizons (4/29/02) has a picture of a boat that apparently was used in filming as well as a report:

Red Dragon: New York spy 'Caipirina' travelled to Islamorada where the Hannibal Lecter prequel has been filming. On Saturday they had a night shoot at a house around Mile Marker 82 on the East Side. Sunday while being out at sea, he came by a sailing boat being used for filming, originally named Nepenthe II out of Coconut Grove (the title was removed).

4/28/02 keysnews.com (from 4/12/02) has an article announcing that filming will take place in Islamorada. Cameras to roll in Islamorada for new Hannibal Lector movie

A Man of Many Faces

The role of FBI agent Jack Crawford has been portrayed by three different actors: Dennis Farina in Manhunter, Scott Glenn in Silence of the Lambs, and Harvey Keitel in Red Dragon. Crawford does not appear in Hannibal but he is mentioned in a deleted scene on the DVD.

The inspiration for Crawford is retired FBI agent John Douglas, one of the individuals who developed criminal-personality profiling. Novelist Thomas Harris based killer Jame Gumb on real-life cases he learned about sitting in on classes at Quantico. Douglas went over his cases with Glenn for preparation for the role. Douglas even was a participant in a DVD commentary on the Criterion Collection edition of The Silence of The Lambs, which is unfortunately not available on the newer editions of the DVD. Douglas has also written a number of books about how he developed profiling from prison interviews with serial killers and cases he's worked on. His books include Mind Hunter, Journey into Darkness, Anatomy of a Motive, and Obsession
