ENDEAVOR TAPS <kpe>: TENPERCENTERY, WEB CO. TO CREATE E-BUSINESSES

By Marc Graser

Variety, January 19, 2000

Endeavor said Tuesday it has tapped Web developer <kpe> to create a slew of Internet businesses for the tenpercentery’s stable of clients.

Under terms of the non-exclusive deal, New York-based <kpe> will help Endeavor incubate Web businesses, providing guidance, including business development, financial planning, Web development, design and technology, and marketing as well as financial, entertainment and technology relationships.

As part of the deal, <kpe> has the option to also work with other agencies to develop e-businesses.

Endeavor plans to launch the first three to six undisclosed sites for its clients in the coming weeks. The sites will cover everything from e-commerce to streaming and downloadable video.

Impressive clientele

The agency reps "Malcolm in the Middle" creator and exec producer Linwood Boomer, David E. Kelley, Edward Norton, James Cameron’s TV ventures, Mark Wahlberg, the WWF, Bette Midler, Minnie Driver, Master P, Warren G and Frances McDormand.

<kpe> has already built several sites for the entertainment community, including script service goodstory.com, bluefly.com, ReacTV and variety.com. It sold beauty.com to drugstore.com last week for $42 million in stock.

Former Creative Artists Agency exec Mark Patricof founded in 1996 to create Web sites targeting the entertainment space. As an incubator, <kpe> plans to build and self-finance a portfolio of other entertainment businesses.

‘Influential agency’

Endeavor attributed the choice of <kpe> to its previous partnership with the former Hollywood exec.

"Endeavor is one of the most influential agencies in the entertainment industry," said Patricof, <kpe>’s CEO. "This relationship shows that Endeavor’s management appreciates and understands the value that new media will create for its client base."

The deal is a coup for <kpe>, which hopes to use it to create a digital studio, with it as the developer, its financing as backing and Endeavor’s clientele as content creators. The deal would mark Endeavor’s first major move on the Web and come after CAA announced a similar, but less extensive deal with Pasadena-based incubator Idealab! to create its own dot-coms for clients.

"We pride ourselves in thinking progressively for our clients," said Endeavor in a joint statement. "In doing so, we welcome the opportunities to collaborate with <kpe>, an established company which has a tangible understanding of Internet business."
