the future. Also, a few days later on April 18, Fight Club will be released on DVD. It will have a lot behind-the-scenes information including outtakes, deleted scenes, and production

EN's Yale visit, AHX lawsuit
|
|
The Yale Bulletin posted an interview and picture of Edward Norton during his 10/3/99 visit to his alma mater to present Fight Club to the Yale Film Society. Click here to read the interview.
Cinefex magazine with the Sleepy Hollow cover has a large article on Fight Club with many pictures. [Thanks to
Joanne for the info on both!]. Please don't confuse this with
Cineaste magazine which will have an interview with EN in its upcoming issue. Legal battles over American History X has shown up on the newswires. AHX director Tony Kaye sued the Director's Guild (DGA) for refusing to let him
take his name off of the film. The DGA asked the judge to dismiss three of seven allegations made by Kaye. The judge dismissed two of the three, but was not persuaded to dismiss the third.
So who won the battle? Well, I'm no lawyer and it seems to matter which account you read, so I've included all three.
Articles and press release. To read all about Kaye's disagreements with
the DGA and New Line Cinema, go to the list of

Edward Norton is interviewed in the documentary Forever Hollywood (Variety 12/5/99). The documentary is on the history of
Hollywood filmmaking and
shows daily and exclusively at American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre. More
info [Thanks to Joanne for the info !]
Variety December 13-19 has a picture of EN. Oscar ads (including ones for Fight Club) are starting to appear in the film industry trade magazines Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
These full page ads are very attractive so you might want to keep an eye out. The Golden Globe award nominations will be announced this Monday (12/20/99). Will EN be one of the nominees? Who knows, but he did
win a Golden Globe for his film debut Primal Fear. The upcoming Cineaste magazine will have an interview with EN. I don't know when it will come out, but I will let you know- take a look at
Cineaste's website [Thanks to Lanbanans for the info !]. If you didn't notice it on the front pages The Face magazine has a great
photo spread and interview with EN.
I have been expanding the website, so there should be more up in the coming days.

Fight Club press, Focus
|
|
There is a lot to mention since last I updated- the most important is the removal of fightclub.com website (it now only consists of a page that links to Amazon.com). After
providing tons of interesting info on Fight Club for several months given to them by FOX sources, they received a cease and desist order from FOX. For the full story, please click here.
British censors have cut two scenes from Fight Club before it was allowed to be shown in the UK. There are numerous magazines available now with EN/Fight Club stuff including: Interview, Empire (Nov and Dec issues), Sight and Sound, Detour, W, and Los Angeles- check my
TV/Magazine alert page for more info [Thanks to everyone who emailed magazine info!]. An excellent in-depth interview with Edward Norton has been published in the book Projections 10 [Thanks to
heather for the info!].
For more information on the book, please click here. One of our nice listmembers transcribed the interview Click here.
A casting RUMOR (that's right, RUMOR) has been posted on Dark
Horizons mentions that EN is up for the lead role as a priest (that would be two priests in a row for Norton) in a upcoming Miramax
movie called Focus. Here is my edited (to integrate info from two different updates) version of the Dark Horizons info [Thanks to
Joanne for passing this along]
Focus: The story is set in present day New York City and is based around a set of
serial killings that have been going on for years. One day, the killer tells his sins to a priest in a confessional, as well as the fact
his victims are women whom he sees in church. The priest is now torn by the fact that he can't tell anyone due to his religion's
rule of confessional. Twists continue when a detective suspects the priest is
in fact the killer, a suspicion which only increases when a woman from the priest's congregation is found killed. UK's Empire Magazine
reports that Edward Norton is up for the lead role of Priest Jefferson, while Angelina
Jolie is also believed to be up for a part. Other rumored casting includes Ben Affleck for a PI named Detective Sanders and
Kate Hudson for the role of a hooker who gets killed early on in the movie. Dark Horizon's also pointed out the similarity of this plot to the
Alfred Hitchcock film I Confess

Fight Club opening weekend
|
|
The final box office numbers have Fight Club as number one ($11 million) on its opening weekend. It did cause some confusion because the early weekend projections based on Friday and Saturday receipts
placed Fight Club as number 3 behind Double Jeopardy and The Story of Us [Thanks to everyone for the info!]. This week's Newsweek has a favorable article on Fight Club, written from a
feminist perspective and calling it a quasi-feminist tale and "Thelma & Louise for guys". Click here to read the
article. To find reviews of Fight Club, go to Rotten Tomatoes,
but be WARNED that many reviews contain PLOT SPOILERS. Hollywood.com has posted audio clips of interviews with Edward Norton and
Helena Bonham Carter about Fight Club [Thanks to
Joanne for the info !]. I've posted transcripts of the EN's interview in
Vanity Fair along with EN and BP's interview in Premiere. Rosie O'Donnell criticized Fight Club on her Monday show. Was this unexpected? Not really. Brad Pitt had the
following comment in Premiere (8/99):
The week that Seven came out, Kathie Lee Gifford said on her show, 'It is your moral imperative to avoid this movie.' If we don't get that on this one, then we've done
something wrong.

Fight Club articles

The Hollywood Reporter (10/8/99) describes negative reaction to the violence in Fight Club. The upcoming Entertainment Weekly has Brad Pitt and Edward Norton on the cover and Rolling Stone magazine has BP on the cover of the new issue. The RS cover picture, along with
pics inside show BP in a dress-- there should be a lot of coverage of Fight Club in the article. Visit Entertainment Weekly website and Rollingstone.com [Thanks to everyone who sent me this info!]

Fight Club L.A. Premiere
|
|
Fight Club premiered in L.A. on Wednesday night. Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, and E! News Daily should have coverage of the premiere TONIGHT (Thurs). Kevin Spacey was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on October 5. Edward
Norton and Jack Lemmon both made speeches at the ceremony. Apparently a special screening of Fight Club was held at Yale (on Sunday night?) with alumnus Edward Norton talking with the audience. Unfortunately, I have no more info and can find no mention of this event in the
online Yale Bulletin and Calendar. If you can verify this info, please let me know.

Fight Club review
|
|
Variety (9/13/99) has given a favorable review to Fight Club. However, this review has many PLOT SPOILERS, and you might enjoy the movie more watching it all unfold in the
theater. However, if it won't ruin your moviegoing experience- read the review- Norton, Pitt are "Fight Club" champs.
The Hollywood Reporter has also reviewed the movie--this review is not favorable, largely due to the reviewer's
discomfort with the dark subject matter. It also has PLOT SPOILERS, but if you want to read it anyway
here it is Fight Club review

Fall Movie Preview
|
|
LA Times Sunday edition (9/12/99) has a giant preview section on the upcoming Fall movies called "Fall Sneaks". This includes a article by Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club
called I Made Most of It Up, Honest and another discussion of the violence in a section of another
article, Settling Scores. Last year's Fall Sneaks included the first ad of American History X, so it might be
worth the effort to pick it up. Gear magazine (10/99) and American Screenwriting magazine both include articles on Fight Club [Thanks to
FightClub9 and annicasvensson
for the info!]

KTF photos, Fight Club in Venice
|
|
The first pic of EN in a clerical collar for his role in Keeping the Faith has now been posted thanks to
vhaddadi for her gracious donation of Who weekly Click here to see the picture!
fightclub.com (unofficial site) reports that a new trailer was a new Fight Club trailer shown
during one of the commercial breaks during the MTV Video Music Awards. I managed
to see the 30 second trailer during the awards replay. However, I would have to disagree with
fightclub.com (which said it was just a shortened version of the other trailers) and say that while it was
mainly clips we have seen in the first two trailers, there was some parts that I haven't seen before. You might try watching a replay of the awards
to catch the trailer. Fight Club was shown Friday night (9/10/99) at the Venice Film Festival and EN, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter were scheduled
to attend. This should be covered on Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, and E! News Daily. While it probably will air on the Monday night
edition of these programs, you might want to catch tonight's (Friday 9/10) to see if there is any additional coverage on the festival. The Associated Press and
Reuters newswire services have already posted articles on the Fight Club screening ("'Fight Club' Packs Literal Punch"
and "Comedy, Violence Mix In Latest Brad Pitt Movie", respectively). The official poster is now
becoming available.
I'm not clear as to how it looks- I believe it is similar to the ad with images of Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, I'll tell you more when I find out. Several sellers on eBay
are auctioning off four different advanced posters for Fight Club. The layout is
similar to the magazine ads: foaming pink soap in a metallic holder against a black background with a written
slogan above. The posters differ only in the slogans: "Works Great On Bloodstains", "Hand Soap? How about swollen and broken fist soap?", "Creates a thick rich lather. Like rabies" and "Wash your feminine side clean off"
[Thanks to Joanne and FightClub9 for the info!]. Joanne also reports seeing Fight Club posters on the sides of buses in Los Angeles.
I'd like to thank batman for cleaning up the Fight Club ad posted on the front page. It really is a different image and thanks for allowing us to appreciate it more.

Fight Club official website
|
|
The official Fight Club website is now online [Thanks to
annicasvensson for the information!]. It seems like it will take a while to
explore (hope you have Shockwave). It has the two twisted public service announcements described in the Premiere magazine article, the trailer, as well as some other video segments (with some coming soon).
It has screensaver downloads (which were previously seen as shockwave presentations on tylerdurden.com and tinylife.com). You can send postcards and choose who you want to fight. I don't want to ruin the experience for you, so go see it on your own---
Official Fight Club Website. It was noted by fightclub.com (an unofficial fan site) that the previous links announced
tylerdurden.com and tinylife.com no longer lead to their original shockwave presentations, they now redirect you to the official
Fight Club website. Us magazine (Oct. issue) has an article on Hollywood and violence and Fight Club is briefly mentioned.

Fight Club ad

Variety magazine(8/30-9/5/99) also contains the Fight Club ad that was in Screen International magazine along with some other mentions of Fight Club in their
Venice Festival coverage. [Thanks to simon_t_doc_7 for the information!].

Runaway Jury on again?
|
|
A New Jury? Variety.com (9/2/99) posted an article stating that the plans for a film adaptation to John Grisham's The Runaway Jury have been
revived. In May 1997, Edward Norton was signed for the lead role in this film, however, the plans never worked out. But before you start your little happy dance, don't expect to see him in
the film. The article goes on to say that EN signed a pay or play deal, has been paid off and "won't be involved in the resuscitated 'Jury' project." Read the
whole article
