Motheless Brooklyn, Frida, Smoochy
|
|
Updates on three projects today
Motherless Brooklyn may be moving ahead.
Lethem Landscape, a website on MB author Jonathan Lethem,
received a tip that Lethem visited the Death to Smoochy set Tues (April 17) afternoon and spoke with EN, Danny De Vito, and
Catherine Keener between takes (more on Motherless Brooklyn). [Thanks to David of
Lethem Landscape for the info!!]
Only days before, EN was an observer
on the Mexico City set (on Sat 4/14) of Frida (a paparazzi pic of him on his way to/from the set made the Mexican papers).
He is not scheduled to start filming his cameo appearance as Nelson Rockefeller in Frida until mid-May. A release date
of December 2001 is scheduled. Fridamovie.com has a daily diary of the Frida filming (more on
Frida).[Thanks to Jacinda of HayekHeaven.net for the info!!]
According to a 4/17 mention in the Toronto Sun, EN still has a few weeks of filming to go on Death to
Smoochy in Toronto. A 4/17 report posted on Dark Horizons indicates that Smoochy director De Vito hated the ending
(which had already been filmed) and had a rewrite done and is also reshooting some other scenes (more on Death to Smoochy.

Smoochy filming
|
|
News on Smoochy filming from Dark Horizons (see below)
and Reel.com's Hollywood Confidential column both include some new casting info:
Salma Hayek has joined the cast. There is no word as to what role she will play.
Death to Smoochy" Robin Williams filmed this Sat and Sunday
in Times Square in front of the ABC news building which had animated
signs created for the film that said "National Kid Network" with a
picture of Robin wearing a pink Rhinoceros mask with phrase "It's
Smoochy Time" this sign was also placed just under where the New Year's
Eve ball drops down. They filmed many close ups on "Military Island"
which is the cement island just below where Times Square splits between
Broadway and Seventh Ave.
Salma Hayek is also in this film. Danny DeVito is producing. Heard
they may return for either day or night shots Wed and Thur, Jan 31
and Feb 1. Last week they did night shots in Chinatown. They may also
shoot somewhere unknown in New Jersey before wrapping here Feb 11 and
finishing up in Toronto."

Smoochy Times Square filming
|
|
It's Smoochy Time!- Dark Horizons had some interesting news about filming that went on at Times Square (see below). Plus
Joanne managed to find the first pics of filming (Robin
Williams and Danny DeVito only) which I've posted on the Smoochy page. Also, filming on Frida Kahlo is no longer starting in March, but will start about four or five months from now. Go to the Frida Kahlo page for more info.
"Death to Smoochy" is currently filming in Times Square. While there weren't any visible cameras or actors around today (stars are Edward Norton, Robin Williams, Jon Stewart, Katherine Keener, and Danny
DeVito, who also directs), two things are noticeable, in addition to a bunch of production assistant types hanging around in some areas. First, above the WB Studio store, there's a HUGE sign with a picture of Norton in costume as "Smoochy," a large purple rhino. The sign says "It's Smoochy Time!" and next to it, neon of "National Kids Net" lights up. Secondly, ABC's big new Times Square studio is covered with photos for exterior shots--lots more shots of Norton as "Smoochy" plaster the windows, and just inside the door a shot of "Smoochy" and his "Rhinettes" (two short
similarly attired men) is visible. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera, so I couldn't snap a shot."

Motherless Brooklyn uncertain
|
|
Changes at New Line, including the departure of production president Michael
De Luca, makes the future of Motherless Brooklyn "unclear". It was announced in Oct 1999
that EN would produce and star in the adaptation of the Jonathan Lethem novel about a detective with
Tourette's Syndrome who tries to find his mentor's killer. Click here
to read about Motherless Brooklyn [Thanks to Joanne for the info!]. The
release date for The Score is also unclear: previews of 2001 movies by Entertainment
Weekly and the Los Angeles Times indicate that the release date is to be announced.
