Editing Disagreement ArticlesYou may be wondering why I have included this section. I had originally included just one article to mention the disagreements over the editing of American History X between director Tony Kaye and New Line Cinema. However, as time has passed, the story has begun to have a life of its own, emerging not only in the entertainment industry press, but also in the general press. In the latter, the story is usually cut down to a three sentence paragraph. I've also found that the shorter the article, the more the focus on blame and name calling rather than the events and why they occurred. Since I don't subscribe to the theory that "less is more" (and I have the space), I have included most of the relevant articles that show the progression of events, hopefully in an evenhanded way. A Novice Auteur Makes His Stand- Los Angeles Times, June 23, 1998This is a full-length article on Tony Kaye at the very beginning of the public dispute Inside Moves- Daily Variety, July 31, 1998This article describes an unusual meeting between Kaye and New Line Cinema execs. Just for Variety column- Daily Variety, August 5, 1998A small mention about the AHX producers deciding on a cut of the film for release. Just for Variety column- Daily Variety, August 7, 1998A paragraph about Kaye trying to keep AHX out of the Toronto Film Festivals NL making 'History' of its own- Hollywood Reporter, August 11, 1998This is a full-length article discussing New Line's decision about releasing the film and also more about the Toronto Film Festival Calendar Live Morning Report- Los Angeles Times, August 22, 1998A paragraph about Kaye asking several AHX co-stars for help Kaye tiptoes eggshells to earn 'History' credit- Hollywood Reporter, September 3, 1998A paragraph on Kaye's attempt to use "Humpty Dumpty" as his director's pseudonym Courting Trouble- Los Angeles Times, September 13, 1998This is a full-length article on the dispute up until that point in time. It also provides background information on AHX screenwriter David McKenna. Kaye pleading the First in 'X' credits dispute- Hollywood Reporter, October 2, 1998This is a full-length article (along with a press release) about Kaye filling a lawsuit against the Director's Guild An Unhappy Beginning- Washington Post, October 12, 1998X Marks The Spat- Entertainment Weekly, October 23, 1998This is a full-length article (many pictures) that summarizes the events to date Kaye lawsuit- November 24, 1998This page includes a company press release by Kaye's attorneys and full-length articles from both the Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety. All three discuss Kaye's filing of a $200 million lawsuit against New Line Cinema and the Director's Guild of America. Kaye Seeking Consideration- Los Angeles Times, January 5, 1999This is a short article on Kaye's attempt for an Oscar nomination for cinematography. Kaye in Berlin- February 6, 1999This is a press release by Tony Kaye on a statement he made in Berlin, days before the film's German premiere. Special Kaye- Entertainment Weekly Reel World section, May 14, 1999A paragraph on Kaye placing ads to New Line exec Michael DeLuca, wanting him to come to London talk about a "big idea." Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't Kaye still suing New Line at the time? Kaye vs. DGA- Dismissal of Motions- December 21, 1999In the lawsuit between Kaye and the DGA, the DGA asked the judge to dismiss three allegations made by Kaye. The judge dismissed two, but not the third. Who is the victor in this skirmish? Depends on which account you read. I've included articles by Reuters and The Hollywood Reporter along with the press release issued by Kaye. Judge tosses Kaye's 'X' suit- Daily Variety, April 25, 2000This article describes the end of Kaye's legal battle with New Line and the DGA, with a federal judge throwing out the lawsuit.
